I set up a still-life this morning, using a Matisse-ish patterned tablecloth as the background. Between the pattern on the vase and the purple tulips, I think I bit off more than I could chew. The disperse pattern – almost free form- a HUGE repeat- made the “patterned” quality that I love so much in Matisse’s backgrounds too scattered. Live and learn.

Today, in the spirit of Matisse, I set up a still life with too many elements. For a 7 x 10″ piece of watercolor paper, I think this was too ambitious. Next time: more simple.
